New Lifesaving Technology Offered at Regional Medical Center of Acadiana (July 2012)

Regional Medical Center of Acadiana is the first hospital in Acadiana to offer the Arctic Sun 5000 Cooling System. It is new technology that is setting industry standards for aiding in the treatment of  patients that go into cardiac arrest.

It works is by using hydro gel pads which adhere to the skin, and then a small machine begins to pump water through, cooling the body rapidly as it goes.

Studies found that cooling down the body temperature to about 91 degrees reduces neurological damage and allows the body to recover faster. The standard way to do that is through ice baths, which are not as effective and are timely. This new technology may be seen in more hospitals as it continues to save lives.
