Dr David Maraist Opens New Practice Location

The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana recently announced the new practice location for Dr David Maraist, Podiatrist. He is now located on the second floor of the medical office building at 4212 West Congress. The new suite number is 2300 A, and the new phone number is (337) 981-5181.
Dr Maraist specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of the foot including bunions, warts, ingrown nails, hammertoes, fractures, corns and callouses, diabetic foot and wound care, heel pain, sprains, arthritis conditions, and sports-related injuries. Dr Maraist also performs reconstructive foot surgery and provides custom orthotics. Dr Maraist was formerly the Chief Resident at East Jefferson General Hospital. He is a member of the American Podiatric Medical Association and the Louisiana Podiatric Medical Association.
Regional Medical Welcomes Dr. Lacie Alfonso

The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana recently announced the addition of Dr Lacie Alfonso as Medical Director of the facilitys rehabilitation and therapy services.
Dr Alfonso brings a wealth of expertise and knowledge in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation to the new role. She is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the American Academy of Electro diagnostic Medicine. Her special interests include musculoskeletal medicine, wound care, stroke and neuromuscular rehabilitation, orthopedic rehabilitation and orthotic, prosthetic and pain management.
Dr Alfonso will be sharing her expertise with Regionals sister facility, Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia.
New Youngsville Clinic

The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana announces the opening of its latest practice. December 1 marked the opening of Regional's family medicine clinic in Youngsville. Dr. Sarika Gunda is now providing comprehensive family medicine for all ages to Youngsville and the surrounding communities. Her practice includes wellness exams, treating coughs and colds, immunizations, minor emergencies and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and asthma, delivered in an efficient, patient-centered environment.
Clinic hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Friday, and it will gladly accommodate walk-ins before 9 a.m. The clinic is conveniently located at 1516 Chemin Metairie, Suite A, in Youngsville.

(LAFAYETTE, LA)The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana recently welcomed Dr. Nina Hall, general surgeon, to its medical staff. Dr. Hall is a board-certified general surgeon whose practice encompasses a broad range of procedures including laparoscopy, endoscopy, breast surgery, wound care and hyperbaric medicine. Her practice includes both adults and children.
Dr. Hall is a graduate of Rutgers University. She completed her medical degree and Masters degree in public health at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. She then completed her residency in the Department of Surgery at Wright State University School of Medicine in Dayton, Ohio.
Dr. Hall is a member of the American College of Surgeons and the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons.
Her office is located at 4212 West Congress, adjacent to The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana, formerly Southwest Medical Center.

Local Cardiologist Invited as Faculty to Two Global Interventional Conventions
Dr. Raghotham Patlola
LAFAYETTECardiovascular Institute of the South (CIS) recently announced that Dr. Raghotham Patlola, cardiologist at CIS Lafayette, is invited to participate as faculty for two global interventional conventions: the China Interventional Therapeutics (CIT) March 2010 convention at the China National Convention Center in Beijing, China and the Scientific Symposium of Transcatheter Cardiovascular Therapeutics (TCT) scheduled for September 2009 at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, California.
The CIT conference is the largest interventional cardiology meeting and one of the most educational teaching courses in the Asia Pacific. More than 4,500 experts, cardiologists, radiologists, and other interventional cardiology professionals will attend the meeting. Live case transmissions, plenary sessions and late breaking trials will be presented at the conference.
This year we have been given a full length Cardiovascular Symposium at CIT which will be co-chaired by Dr. Craig Walker and myself, said Dr. Patlola. We will be performing live peripheral cases for the audience from Fuwai Hospital in Beijing, China.
Dr. Patlola is also invited to the TCT conference in California next month. This conference attracts more than 10,000 attendees and offers more than 2,000 presentations and live cases. TCT offers the global interventional community a unique opportunity to learn the latest breaking clinical science and review evolving management strategies which will result in improved outcomes for patients with heart disease.
Dr. Patlola began working for CIS in 2004 as a staff cardiologist. He is board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, nuclear cardiology and endovascular medicine. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American Medical Association and the Society for Vascular Medicine and Biology.
Chief Operating Officer Appointed to The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana
Mario Garner, COO
Lafayette, LA Mario Garner, FACHE, has been named Chief Operating Officer (COO) for The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana (formerly Southwest Medical Center), according to Vicki R. Briggs, Chief Executive Office (CEO).
Prior to joining The Regional Medical Center of Acadiana, Garner served as the Associate Administrator for West Houston Medical Center, since 2005. During his tenure, he led growth initiatives for the hospitals Comprehensive Outpatient Rehab Services as well as the Outpatient Wound Healing Center. Garner advanced a year-round recognition of employee diversity and was the on the front line for the improvement of overall hospital patient satisfaction.
Before the successful initiatives at West Houston Medical Center, Garner was the Chief Executive Officers Administrative Intern at the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans (MCLNO) from June 2005 to August 2005. At MCLNO, he worked with the senior administrative council to develop a patient scheduling protocol to decrease wait-times for the Systems primary care and specialty clinics.
Garner began his health administration career at HCA-Tulane University Hospital in New Orleans as an Administrative Resident from 2002 to 2004.
Garner is a native of Lake Charles, La. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, La., in May 2002 and a Masters Degree in Healthcare Administration with a concentration in Health Systems Management in May, 2004 from Tulane University.
In May 2010, Garner is scheduled to receive a Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership and Higher Education Administration from the University of Houston.
Garner has been recognized as one of the "Top 30 Leaders Under 30 for 2006" by Ebony Magazine. He is credentialed as a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE). Garner is also a former Student Body Vice President at Louisiana State University.

Lafayette, LA Vicki Romero Briggs, FACHE and Kathy J. Bobbs, FACHE have been named to the leadership team for the recently announced regional health system in Acadiana. The system represents a group of complementary and affiliated health care facilities, each associated with HCA Inc. (Hospital Corporation of America), including Womens & Childrens Hospital and Southwest Medical Center. Briggs will serve as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Bobbs will serve as Senior Vice President - Strategy and Business Development. Bobbs will also continue in her present role as CEO of Womens & Childrens Hospital.
I am both pleased and excited about the formation of this leadership team and what it means for the future of our efforts in Acadiana, said Dr. Donald Mickal, Chief of Medical Staff for Womens & Childrens Hospital. Both Vicki and Kathy bring the experience necessary to ensure that our medical staffs as well as our patients receive the focus necessary to ensure quality delivery of healthcare.
In addition, Kyle J. Viator, CEO of Southwest Medical Center will retire June 1, 2009 after 30 years with HCA Inc. in various leadership roles including CEO of Dauterive Hospital in New Iberia. Among the many achievements during Viators tenure, Southwest Medical Center advanced its top-rated cardiovascular program by achieving Cycle II Chest pain Accreditation from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, has had nationally recognized vascular outcomes over several consecutive years and received several Louisiana Quality Awards in cardiovascular care from the Louisiana Health Care Review, Inc., all of which have positioned Southwest as not only a leading provider of acute care services but also as one of the regions leaders in cardiovascular services. Upon Viators retirement from Southwest Medical Center, Briggs will assume the CEO duties in addition to her role with the system, and Viator will serve in a consulting role during the transition period.
First, on behalf of the entire team at Southwest, I want to both commend and thank Kyle for extraordinary leadership during his years at the helm, stated Mike Barras, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Southwest Medical Center. His sense of duty and commitment to excellence never wavered and his presence will be greatly missed.

Briggs, an American College of Healthcare Executives Fellow (FACHE), has more than three decades in leadership roles in healthcare. She most recently served as Vice President of Operations for Health Management Associates, Inc. (Division 1), Birmingham, Alabama, responsible for 12 hospitals in Alabama, North and South Carolina and Pennsylvania. Prior to this role, Briggs served as CEO of Affinity Health System, which is a partnership between Baptist Health System and Triad Hospitals, Inc. Her experience in healthcare also includes serving as CEO of Longview Regional Medical Center, Longview, Texas. She was President of the Baton Rouge Market for Columbia Healthcare Systems of Louisiana, responsible for two hospitals, three surgery centers, a physician hospital organization and statewide physician management services. Prior to this, Briggs served in the capacity of President and CEO of Baton Rouge-based Womans Hospital Foundation, a 225-bed OB/GYN specialty hospital which included a 56 bed Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), with 1,200 employees and 400 physicians. Prior to this role, she served as Chief Financial Officer/Controller. Briggs earned her B.S. from Nicholls State University, Thibodaux, Louisiana and did graduate work at Samford University, Birmingham, Alabama. Active in various Louisiana healthcare initiatives, Briggs served as Chair of the Louisiana Commission on Perinatal Care and Infant Mortality from 1990 to 1997. Briggs is also a graduate of the 1994 class of Leadership Louisiana, sponsored by the Council for a Better Louisiana (CABL).
Kathy J. Bobbs, FACHE, has been CEO of Womens & Childrens Hospital since 2000, spearheading the growth of the hospital as it has become the regions leader in pediatrics and womens services. Prior to joining Womens & Childrens, Bobbs was CEO for Riverview Medical Center, located in Gonzales, Louisiana. She came to Louisiana in 1997 after serving in several leadership roles at Doctors Hospital in Little Rock, Arkansas. A long-time volunteer in the Lafayette community, Bobbs has been a board member of the United Way of Acadiana since 2003 and was the Board Chair for 2008-2009. During her tenure in Gonzales, Bobbs was named the 1999 Ascension Parish Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year. She also served on the board of the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce from 2004 -2006. Bobbs is a very active member in the healthcare industry, serving as a Delegate to the American Hospital Association since 2006.
In addition, she has been on the board of the Louisiana Hospital Association since 2005 and has participated on a number of key task forces and committees.
Bobbs is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE), a member of the Louisiana Maternal/Child Health Coalition, and was appointed this year to serve on the Louisiana Workforce Investment Council. Bobbs attended the University of Arkansas where she earned an Associate Degree in Nursing, a B.S. in Psychology and a Master of Health Services Administration.
The creation of the regional health system also includes consolidating Womens & Childrens Hospital and Southwest Medical Center, creating one hospital with two complementary campuses and a total of 252 licensed beds, 51 NICU beds and 45 bassinets. With the consolidation, each campus retains the same services that patients have come to rely upon. The affiliated health care facilities in the regional health system also include New Iberia-based Dauterive Hospital with103 licensed beds. (Dauterive Hospital is not part of the consolidation of Womens & Childrens Hospital and Southwest Medical Center). In addition, two Lafayette-area outpatient facilities are affiliated with the system: the Elaine M. Junca Womens Imaging Centre and Lafayette Surgicare. The system also contains 16 medical office buildings with over 400,000 square feet of space and 37 employed multi-specialty physicians in eight (8) practices.
Over the next several weeks, the name of the regional health system and the renaming Southwest Medical Center to reflect the new system name will be announced along with further additions to the systems leadership team. The consolidation of the two hospitals should be effective by the third quarter of 2009.
Southwest Medical Center Welcomes Dr. William A. Brennan

Lafayette, LA Southwest Medical Center recently welcomed Dr. William A. Brennan, Neurosurgeon, to its medical staff. Dr. Brennan recently opened his practice, Neurosurgical Solutions of Lafayette, LLC, in the Southwest Louisiana Professional Office Building at 4212 West Congress Street, Suite 3500, on the campus of Southwest Medical Center.
Dr. Brennan's Vanderbilt training and practice emphasis is comprehensive neurosurgery including minimally invasive techniques, complex spine surgery and peripheral nerve surgery. "We believe that every patient deserves to try non-surgical means to improve before recommending surgery," says Dr. Brennan.
Dr. Brennan is a graduate of University of South Carolina School of Medicine in Columbia, South Carolina, and he completed his internship and residency at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.
Dr. Brennan is board-certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurological Surgeons and Congress of Neurological Surgeons.

Dr. Moore has opened Moore Healthcare Group located at 3400 Moss Street in Lafayette. Dr. Moore's practice emphasis is comprehensive family medicine delivered in a timely, patient-centered environment. The scope of care includes the treatment of coughs and headaches, to more extreme injuries such as broken bones and lacerations and the ability to perform laboratory tests in the office.
